We Insure Your Free Spirit

Share

What is it about the open road? It calls like a siren beckoning sailors to sea and sends us crisscrossing the country in search of the next horizon. You zip up your two-piece, settle into the saddle for a long haul and never look back. It’s not about being a bad boy (or girl) — or a weekend warrior. It’s just about you and your machine. You hit that throttle, and nothing exists beyond the moment you’re in. It’s something about that bike, and leaving it all behind in a rush of wind and road, that says freedom like nothing else in the world. And that’s what it’s all about. Because every ride is a new adventure — and real bikers always take the long road home.

But freedom doesn’t mean being reckless. Because when you take safety seriously, the adventure can continue for many, many miles to come. And that includes everything from keeping your ride in good working order to having a road kit to deal with breakdowns and emergencies. There are a few other things that are simply street-smart when it comes to bike safety:

Gear up for the ride. Wear a full-face helmet rated for safety, not just style. And while you’re at it, make sure your clothing is protective — full leathers, over the ankle boots and a good pair of gloves.

See and be seen. Always remember that motorcycles can be hard for cagers to see. Keep your headlight on day and night, and steer clear of the blind spots of cars and trucks. Reflective strips for your clothing and your ride make it more likely drivers will spot you, but in case they don’t, always maintain situational awareness.

Keep your head in the ride. Be mindful of potential collisions, beware of traps and plan your escape routes. Follow the rules of the road, use turn signals and manage your lane positioning to optimize your visibility — and your path out of a dangerous situation.

Know your bike and know yourself. Study the manual and make pre-ride checks part of your safety routine. Practice emergency braking and swerves before swinging into traffic (and regularly thereafter). Your ability to handle your bike in extreme conditions could save your life.

Course correct. Consider a hands-on safety course to hone your safety skills. Find a Motorcycle Safety Foundation RiderCourse somewhere near you or see what your local DMV offers.

For all you put into your ride, things can still go wrong. Keep your insurance policy up to date and make sure it’ll cover all the things you need it to:

Protect your ride. Collision insurance covers damage to your bike when it hits or is hit by another vehicle. Comprehensive physical damage policies cover damage from things outside of collisions like theft and vandalism.

Protect yourself — and your back warmer. Personal Injury Protection covers medical expenses for you and your passenger in the event of an accident, while uninsured motorist coverage comes into play for injuries caused by uninsured drivers.

Protect people and property. Bodily injury liability can offer coverage in the event you injure someone while on your bike, while property damage liability can pay for damage caused to others’ property while operating your motorcycle.

Free spirits ride with the confidence that comes from knowing they’re prepared and protected, no matter what the road ahead has in store. Your local We Insure agent can review all your coverage and premium options — and help keep your route clear for the ride of your life.
